Here's a classic Red Velvet Cake recipe:
Ingredients:
For the Cake:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 16 ounces (2 blocks) cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
For the Cake:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, then add the vegetable oil, buttermilk, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until the batter is smooth.
- Divide the batter equally between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then, remove the cakes from the pans and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
- In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter until well combined and smooth.
- Gradually add the confectioners' sugar and vanilla extract, and continue to beat until the frosting is creamy and free of lumps.
Assembling the Cake:
- Once the cake layers have cooled, place one layer on a serving plate or cake stand.
- Spread a layer of cream cheese frosting on top of the first layer.
- Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake with the remaining cream cheese frosting.
- You can decorate the cake as desired, perhaps with cake crumbs, red velvet cake crumbs, or fresh berries.
- Slice and serve your delicious Red Velvet Cake.
- Enjoy your homemade Red Velvet Cake!
