Here's a classic recipe for homemade lasagna:
Ingredients:
For the Meat Sauce:
- 1 pound (450g) ground beef or ground Italian sausage
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For the Cheese Filling:
- 15 ounces ricotta cheese
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
Additional Ingredients:
- 9 lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef (or sausage) over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for a few minutes until the onions are soft and translucent.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Simmer the sauce for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Then, remove it from the heat.
- In a separate bowl, prepare the cheese filling. Combine the ricotta cheese, egg, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
- To assemble the lasagna, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Place three cooked lasagna noodles on top of the sauce.
- Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles.
- Sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Repeat the layers: meat sauce, three lasagna noodles, remaining ricotta cheese mixture, and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.
- Top the lasagna with the final three lasagna noodles, the remaining meat sauce, and the remaining mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese over the top.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, making sure it doesn't touch the cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes or until the lasagna is bubbly and the cheese is golden brown.
- Let it rest for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows the lasagna to set up a bit and makes it easier to serve.
- Enjoy your homemade lasagna! You can serve it with a side salad and garlic bread for a complete meal.
