Lasagna

Here's a classic recipe for homemade lasagna:

Ingredients:

For the Meat Sauce:

  1. 1 pound (450g) ground beef or ground Italian sausage
  2. 1 onion, finely chopped
  3. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  4. 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  5. 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  6. 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  7. 2 teaspoons dried basil
  8. 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  9. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  10. 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Cheese Filling:

  1. 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  2. 1 egg
  3. 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  4. 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  5. Salt and pepper to taste

Additional Ingredients:

  • 9 lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef (or sausage) over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for a few minutes until the onions are soft and translucent.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Simmer the sauce for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Then, remove it from the heat.
  5. In a separate bowl, prepare the cheese filling. Combine the ricotta cheese, egg, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  6. To assemble the lasagna, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  7. Place three cooked lasagna noodles on top of the sauce.
  8. Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles.
  9. Sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese.
  10. Repeat the layers: meat sauce, three lasagna noodles, remaining ricotta cheese mixture, and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.
  11. Top the lasagna with the final three lasagna noodles, the remaining meat sauce, and the remaining mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese over the top.
  12. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, making sure it doesn't touch the cheese.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes or until the lasagna is bubbly and the cheese is golden brown.
  14. Let it rest for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows the lasagna to set up a bit and makes it easier to serve.
  15. Enjoy your homemade lasagna! You can serve it with a side salad and garlic bread for a complete meal.
